Sapere aude,

Incipe: vivendi qui recte prorogat horam.

Rusticus expectat dum defluat amnis; at ille

Labitur, et labetur in omne volubilis aevum.

Horace, Epistles, I, II, 40

Studia Hermetica is an academic project created with multiple purposes in mind: to become a valuable framework for undertaking research projects focused on Ancient and Renaissance currents of thought, with special emphasis on Platonic and Hermetic philosophies; to serve as an open and shared platform for learning and teaching across diverse topics within the broad field of the History of Thought; and finally, to promote a humanistic perspective on life—one that is respectful of humanity and of our delicate and astonishing environment.

Studia Hermetica is primarily devoted to the study of Ancient Philosophy and its reception in modern times. It adopts textual criticism as its principal method for engaging with the vast legacy of splendor and intellectual richness that comprises the History of Western Civilization. In this regard, we do not consider ourselves “experts in esotericism” or similar labels, but rather humanists eager to learn and share our inquiries and ideas.

Studia Hermetica is composed of historians, philologists, philosophers, and scientists from around the world, and it is fully open to contributions from anyone interested in human evolution. This simply means that if you wish to share your work and essays to help make our world and civilization more habitable and sublime, you are most warmly welcome.

Studia Hermetica is a project designed and conceived by humanists, and consequently, it is directed toward humanists worldwide, seeking their contributions and suggestions to help humanity grow. Our humanistic aims are grounded in the same principles affirmed by Renaissance philosophers of the 15th and 16th centuries. This means we strongly encourage the study of classical and ancient languages, alongside the corpus of works inherited from Antiquity and Hellenistic culture. Therefore, our range of interests encompasses the entire History of Thought—Philosophy, Science, and Religion—as well as its modern manifestations.

We deeply believe that the union of nations is a noble task for the 21st century, but we reject the notion that such unity should be based solely on materialistic, political, or economic principles. On the contrary, we maintain that the emergence of a new human being, enriched by the cultural heritage of a millennia-old and resilient civilization, will become the strongest pillar of a bright future.

We affirm a simple principle: study and work make us better.

Studia Hermetica Journal

Studia Hermetica Journal (SHJ) was a peer-reviewed online journal devoted to the study of Hermetism and other ancient philosophical currents, like Middle Platonism, Neoplatonism, or Theurgy. In general terms, we focused our inquiries on Late Antiquity and the reception of these ancient opuses in Renaissance and Modern Times. In addition, SHJ was opened to the rest of the fields normally involved in the so called Western Esotericism, such as Christian Theosophy, Mysticism, Masonry, Rosicrucianism, as well as History of Alchemy, Astrology, and Magic or Occultism.
